Andrea Hausberg, Professional Windsurfer from Germany
Hi Everyone, my name is Andrea Hausberg, I'm 24 and come from Germany and I'm a professional windsurfer.I take part in the PWA Windsurfing Worldtour in the disciplines Wave and Freesytle.

1, When and why did you start windsurfing?
I started in 1992. I started because the german
champion Bernd Flessner lives where Ilive and I
always saw him and some other really good guys out
there on the water and thought that must be really
cool i wanna learn that.
2, When did you do your first race?
My first race was in 1994. I was a member of the so
called Old Spice Team of the german Surf Academy (the
german equivalent to the mauii ocean academy) and we
were supposed to take part in the german windsurfing
tour.

3, Your best result so far?
7th In Freestyle a couple of times in PWA Worldtour
events.

4, What is your favorite windsurfing spot?
Gran Canaria, as the wind is always blowing and there
are good freestyle conditions (often flat water but
sometimes also good waves for Waveriding).

5, At what age were you when you had your first
windsurfing experience?
That was when i started to take lessons in a windsurfing school.

6, Did you enjoy it straight away or did it take you a while to realise that this was the sport for you?
I really enjoyed it straight away and I had a really
good instructor. From then on I was on the water
nearly everyday and at that time (only 12) I was
already sure that I was gonna take part in the PWA
Worldtour some day, although it was only childish dream
at that time, I never thought it would really happen.
That's something that really makes me smile today.

7, Did your parents encourage you to take up the sport?

No, my Mum even hesitated at first because its not the cheapest sport. But Iwanted it so bad that she allowed me to do it.

8, Were there alot of girls taking up Windsurfing at the time?

no not at all. I was the only little girl and became kind of well known on my lake as Iwas out there everyday ripping with the guys.

9, Is windsurfing seen as a male sport in some countries and were you ever compared to them.?

oh very much, yeah. In Germany its a male sport. We only have 5 girls competing in the national tour. I'm the only german girl that has constantly competed in the worldtour since 2002. I had a couple of good results but until now Ihave never been mentioned at all in the main german surf magazine! But they write about guys that take part in small local contests. That's different in spain, where the world champion Daida Moreno and her sister Iballa Moreno live and practice. Because of them there is a lot female windsurfing in the press. And so they write about the other spanish girls also.

10, Have you ever had any major injuries ?

No, not really. many bruises and sometimes problems with ligaments, but windsurfing is not really dangerous.

11, Can you earn good money windsurfing or do you
have to rely on Sponsorship?
I cannot live on windsurfing at all, which is the same for 80% of the girls on the worldtour. Only about 6 girls compete worldwide in the Wave and freestyle tour and are fully sponsored. The rest have bad contracts and problems getting to the events at all. Some really talented girls from the top had to give up because they couldn't find anybody who would support them. I finance myself with work during my university semester and I get sails cheaper from my semisponsor Arrows.
12, Do you enjoy any other sports?
I love surfing! And Inline Skating.

13, How do you feel this season has gone?

Pretty good actually. I had bad luck sometimes because
i was badly equipped this year. For example my sails
broke just in the middle of a race because they're so
old. So I had some bad results, but I did maintain a
seventh place in freestyle in most of the races until
my last event in Canada in which i couldn't take part I
was seventh overall, which is more than i expected.

14, Have you ever tried any extreme sports?
No, but I would! But right now I'm so involved in
windsurfing and surfing that i don't have the time for
any other sport.
15, What are your future plans in Windsurfing?
Keep on competing in the PWA worldtour, learn new
manovers to get 5th in Freestyle or wave, go to
Maui/Hawaii one day.

16, What do you enjoy doing when you are not
windsurfing?
I play guitar a lot, I love it, and piano.
But most of the time when I'm not windsurfing i have to
study for my Master degree in Information Management.

17, Do you ever take part in any modelling?
No, I tried to do it for some surf companies but they
have so many girls who never eat anything and don't
have any muscles, unfortunately thats the type of women
that these companies prefer, although you can see
straight away that this model never ever stood on a
surfboard.

18 Can you give 2 tips to other girls who would like to start WS?

Surfing or windsurfing is the best fat burner ever!
You're out there on the water for hours because you
cannot stop, that's a lot of sport per day! So start
Windsurfing!
Get a good instructor, it's important to learn the basics
from someone who really knows what they are talking about.
